roll out!

Blog moved to my new personal domain! It'll still be a blog, but it'll have other goodies on it too!

Check it thenfinite.com

I wonder if I'll ever be given the chance to snipe nfinite.com in the future...

flashcarDS

Well, I managed to finish it... for better or worse.  I feel like I've repeated myself a few too many times describing this project (in the forum post, the file post, and the readme).  So i'll just post the links and I'm sure you can find out what it does if you're interested.

beat me to it

While I was in Japan, one thing I wanted was some kind of device that could use a camera and recognize kanji and look them up in a dictionary for me.  It was kind of a pain to open up the DS and write in kanji.  I thought to myself, I should make a mobile app that would do this. The only problem is that I don't own any smartphones.

Well... looks like this kinda beat me to it.  Though it's for Chinese and it's for the iPhone... but the concept is there, and I'm sure it's a simple matter of communicating with a japanese dictionary rather than a chinese dictionary.  Still, if they come out with this for Japanese and for Android, I might have to drop some dough on an Android phone...

If they don't by the time I save up enough extra money for an Android phone, then maybe I'd have to take a shot at it.  Though, you know the feeling when you come up with an idea that you think no one has done before and make these plans to try and follow through with the idea only to find out that someone else has done it?  Yeah, it kinda ruins the fun.  Oh well...

In other news, I'm about 1/3 of the way through making a flashcards app for the DS.  After looking up the other SRS (spaced repetition system) alternatives on the DS, I wasn't really satisfied.  Though my own version is going to suck hardcore compared to these other ones, it has one distinct advantage that I think is worth investing my own time.

The one that syncs with Anki is great because it uses the Anki system... but it requires wireless sync (at least I'm pretty sure it does).  Which is kind of a pain b/c homebrew and DS wireless is kind of a pain sometimes.  The other option was ndsrs, which didn't require wireless sync - you can copy over decks and even export decks from Anki.

But the one thing I wanted most, was the ability to create cards away from the computer.  Wireless sync requires computer, manual updating requires computer.  Since I suck at coding and don't have that much time left til school starts (or you can say I'm lazy) I'm going to throw away the advantages of the other two.  I'm throwing away TTF rendering of the kanji.  And I'm throwing away the proper Anki SRS algorithm (because I'm too lazy to see how it really works, I'm just gonna ballpark my own).

I will get the ability to make my own cards on the fly though.... seems like a lot of work just for this feature.  Oh well...

Guess I'll update when I finish... which hopefully is before this Saturday... cuz that's when I move back to campus... this summer break has gone by really fast...
